Case-spiration: E24 - 8 Ways AI Feels Case Writing Will Evolve
From Creativity to Real-Time Insights
Welcome Fellow Case Writers!
I recently took part in the Case Centre’s Annual Members’ Forum on the AI and Case Writing Panel with some amazingly accomplished Case Writers and Teachers.
Panel discussion: The case method and AI: opportunities and risks
🗣 Vicky Lester (The Case Centre), Euvin Naidoo (Thunderbird School of Global Management), Matthew Schonewille (Redeemer University) and Dr Natasha Katuta Mwila (PhD, SFHEA, MCMI) (University of Warwick - Warwick Business School)
The discussion was so dynamic and insightful with lot’s of wisdom and challenging thoughts as a result.
One of the questions I was asked was: “What exciting opportunities do you see for case writers, and how might AI enhance the quality or creativity of case materials?”
After the discussion I thought, what would ChatGPT say when posed this question. Below is the result of that question being asked and ChatGPT’s subsequent response.
Response 7 was one that really excited me because of the possibility that that presents for all existing cases.
AI Opportunities for AI Case Writing
This is ChatGPT’s Response to the question below:
What exciting opportunities do you see for case writers, and how might AI enhance the quality or creativity of case materials?
AI presents a range of exciting opportunities for case writers, offering ways to enhance both the quality and creativity of case materials. Here are several ways AI can transform the case writing process:
1. Faster Research and Data Analysis
AI can assist case writers in rapidly gathering and synthesizing information from diverse sources. This allows writers to incorporate real-time, relevant data, which can elevate the accuracy and timeliness of case studies. AI-powered tools can also analyze large datasets, uncovering trends or insights that case writers might not have time to discover on their own. This efficiency gives writers more time to focus on storytelling and crafting engaging narratives.
2. Enhanced Creativity through Scenario Generation
AI can help generate different "what if" scenarios, providing case writers with new perspectives and creative angles. For instance, AI could simulate potential market reactions or business outcomes based on varying decision paths, allowing for a more dynamic and multi-faceted exploration of business challenges. This can enrich the realism and complexity of the cases, making them more engaging and challenging for students.
3. Personalized and Adaptive Cases
AI has the potential to create cases that adapt to different learning styles or needs. For instance, AI-driven case platforms could adjust the complexity or focus of a case based on the learner's progress, providing additional context or challenges as needed. This personalization could make case materials more effective in teaching critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
4. Natural Language Processing (NLP) for Dialogue and Role-play
In case-based role-playing exercises, AI can generate realistic dialogue and responses for different stakeholders in a scenario (e.g., executives, employees, customers). This can allow students to interact with AI-powered characters, adding a layer of immersion and realism to the learning experience. Such interactivity could help learners better understand human dynamics in business settings.
5. Improving Case Writing through AI-Powered Editing
AI tools can act as smart editors, helping case writers refine their narratives by suggesting improvements in clarity, flow, and structure. Advanced language models can identify overly complex language or gaps in logic, ensuring that cases are both rigorous and accessible. AI can also check for biases, ensuring a fair and inclusive representation of different groups or perspectives within the case.
6. Incorporating Visuals and Multimedia Elements
AI can easily generate visual aids, infographics, or even simulations that complement the written material. Case studies that traditionally relied on text can be enriched with AI-generated graphs, models, and interactive visuals, making the material more engaging and helping learners visualize complex business scenarios.
7. Creating Real-time or Living Cases
AI tools can continuously update cases with current data, making them living documents that reflect ongoing market or industry changes. Writers can build cases that evolve with time, allowing students to revisit scenarios and explore how decisions made earlier would play out in the light of new information or shifts in external conditions.
8. Global and Cross-cultural Perspectives
AI’s ability to analyze content across languages and regions means case writers can easily incorporate global perspectives into their materials. AI can help simulate international market conditions or cultural differences in business practices, offering a richer, more diversified set of challenges for learners.
AI opens the door for case writers to become more innovative and efficient while maintaining a high level of rigor and depth in their work. Although, dependency and potential information Hallucinations are always possible as case writers journey down the new road of AI use.
This process good or bad, allows for new kinds of interactivity, realism, and responsiveness, ensuring that case studies remain engaging and relevant in a rapidly changing business landscape.
