3 Versions in 30 Minutes: How ChatGPT Helped Me Tackle a Testing Crisis
Hey Fellow Case Writers!
I hope your week is going well. This week’s edition is going to be a bit different but very practical to all of you…. well many of you.
Audio Version of this newsletter for Easy Listening below…..
I had a test for my class where we were set up to do an in class test that was delivered via our LMS - Learning Management System. My first class went off with out a hitch and we completed the test as expected.
But during my second class, the technology bug struck and we had some major problems where students were not able to complete the test via the expected delivery route.
I was obviously frustrated and so were my students and we had to reschedule the test for another day.
I then went back to my office and had about 1.5 hours before my day was done to ponder what I could have done to ensure this test could have been delivered without a hitch.
In reality, I did not come to a solution with our LMS BUT I commit to delivering the rescheduled test in the traditional paper format to negate any more technical problems.
Below is how I used ChatGPT and some creative thinking to generate 3 versions of a 50 question multiple choice test that was both fair and applicable in 30 Minutes.
YES, I said that correctly, 3 Versions IN 30 MINUTES.
3 Versions in 30 Minutes
This would have taken me hours before.
After the technology bug problem I committed to delivering my test in paper format. I know I know but what about the trees Matt? Well I love the trees but this test needed to happen.
My first problem was that they question bank was online and I did not have a document with them on it. I was stuck! I needed to figure out how to get the question bank exported to get the questions into a word document.
This was easier said then done!
I could only export them in random formats like XHTML which I can read BUT with ChatGPT I only needed to get the data and it would be able to sort and reformat the test in a readable way.
AMAZING solution.
Step-by-Step Process:
1. Initial Task:
I provided a set of 50 multiple-choice questions and asked to format them in a cleaner, print-friendly format without changing any content.
Prompt 1: I need your help to keep the integrity of each question but clean up in a better format for me to print them
Prompt 2: ok here is my text.. list the answers for me
2. Randomizing Version 1:
I requested the same questions to be reordered randomly to create a second version for students to take without seeing the same question order as their peers.
Prompt 3: No you see my version 1.. I need to create a new version with exactly the same questions _ NO CHANGES to them BUT, they will be in a random order so that students sitting next to each other will not get an advantage to see their friends tests. Create another 50 question version with the SAME EXACT questions JUST IN A DIFFERENT ORDER
Prompt 4: and now list the answer key
3. Randomizing Version 2:
I asked to randomize the questions again to create a third version, ensuring the order was different from both Version 1 and Version 2.
4. Answer Keys for Each Version:
For each version, I requested and received an answer key to match the randomized question orders. This ensured I had accurate answer sets for all three versions.
Prompt 5: take this conversation and give me a format/step by step I did in this conversation that I can share with someone who wants to know what i did but does not want to read everything
5. Summary Request:
Finally, I asked for this step-by-step summary to share with someone who doesn't want to read the full conversation but wants to understand the process.
So, the next question is, did it work? Yes, the tests were created in 30 minutes I am all set for my in person paper based test that is randomized and checked.
I used to do this as a normal task before but logically it took WAY longer and now I was able to do this and save myself some time that I can reuse elsewhere.
