Hey Fellow Case Writers!

Hello everyone! I wanted to share a quick update about an exciting new feature recently announced by OpenAI for ChatGPT. While I don’t often make such announcements, this one caught my attention, and I thought it would be valuable to discuss it with you all.

OpenAI has just released information about the new GPT Search functionality. I was fortunate enough to be on the waitlist, I finally have access to it. Although I haven’t had the chance to explore it extensively yet, I’m eager to dive in and understand how it works.

First Impressions

Upon accessing GPT Search, I noticed a new search-the-web icon, which appears alongside the option to attach a file. Unlike traditional search engines like Google, my intention isn’t to use GPT Search for general browsing. Instead, I want to leverage it for more specific tasks, such as generating detailed case studies with authentic citations.

Testing GPT Search with a Case Study Generator

To test the new feature, I decided to use my free case study generator. Here’s a step-by-step look at what I did:

  1. Creating a Prompt: I inputted a prompt into the generator to create a case study about artificial intelligence and machine learning, focusing on a specific problem related to bitcoin mining.

  2. Generating the Case Study: After entering my email address and generating the prompt, I copied it and pasted it into GPT Search. Upon execution, GPT Search began crafting the case study.

  3. Authentic Citations: Unlike previous versions where the case studies were entirely synthetic, GPT Search started including real citations from actual sources. On the right side of the interface, I could see these sources, making the content more credible and grounded in real-world information.

Analyzing the Results

This new functionality marks a significant difference in how ChatGPT handles and internet search compared to before. Previously, case studies generated by ChatGPT were entirely synthetic, meaning they were created from scratch without real-world references. With GPT Search, the AI can now incorporate authentic data and citations, enhancing the reliability and depth of the generated content.

Considerations

However, this new feature also brings some considerations:

  • Accuracy of Citations: While GPT Search provides real citations, it’s essential to verify their accuracy and relevance. As an educator, I need to ensure that the sources are reliable and appropriately referenced.

  • Ethical Use: The ability to generate content with real citations raises questions about the acceptable use of AI in creating academic materials. It’s crucial to ensure that this tool is used ethically and responsibly.

Practical Application

To illustrate, I took the generated case study and observed how GPT Search incorporated citations. Here’s what I found:

  • Real-World References: The case study included citations from genuine sources, making the information more robust.

  • Search Functionality: GPT Search acted similarly to a search engine but was tailored to generate content based on detailed prompts. This means it not only searches the web for information but also integrates it seamlessly into the generated text.
