Celebrating our 50th issue with a look at how AI is revolutionizing case writing
Why AI is a Case Writer's New Best Friend
Case writing is a time-intensive process – from identifying the right scenario to structuring teaching notes that align with learning objectives. AI tools are now making this process more accessible, efficient, and creative than ever before. Here's why incorporating AI into your case development workflow makes sense:
Speed without sacrificing quality: Generate first drafts in minutes rather than days
Overcome writer's block: Get suggestions when you're stuck on a particular section
Enhance creativity: Explore alternative scenarios and perspectives you might not have considered
Consistency: Maintain a consistent voice and structure throughout your case
Simple Ways to Use AI in Your Case Writing Process
1. Initial Brainstorming & Concept Development
Start by asking an AI assistant to help you brainstorm case ideas based on learning objectives. For example:
"I need a business ethics case that demonstrates stakeholder management for my undergraduate business course. Can you suggest 3-5 potential scenarios that would work well?"
2. Creating Realistic Characters and Scenarios
Once you have your concept, use AI to develop believable characters facing authentic challenges:
"Help me create a protagonist for my marketing case study. They should be a mid-level marketing manager at a consumer goods company facing challenges with a digital transformation initiative."
3. Drafting Dialogue and Narratives
AI excels at generating natural-sounding dialogue for your case characters:
"Write a conversation between the CEO and the sustainability director discussing the potential reputational risks of their new manufacturing process."
4. Developing Teaching Notes
Perhaps the most valuable application – use AI to help structure comprehensive teaching notes:
"Based on this case about supply chain disruption, help me outline teaching notes that include key questions, analysis frameworks, and possible student responses."
5. Creating Complementary Materials
Enhance your case with additional resources:
"Create a financial spreadsheet template that students can use to analyze the investment decision in this case."
Practical process for using AI

Case Study: Claude is Better than ChatGPT for Writing… so far.
Yes, you heard me correctly. In my research I have been amazed at the ability for Claude to generate text that is more inline with what I want to create.
I have created more one to 3 prompt complete cases than with ChatGPT
Claude does an exceptional job when given a detailed prompt (2-3k words)
I prefer Claudes default formatting but that is not as relevant
Claude costs the same as ChatGPT BUT you might hit the output limit quicker than with ChatGPT - So annoying.
The result? A compelling, well-structured case completed in hours rather than weeks, leaving her time to focus on classroom delivery and student engagement.

While AI can dramatically simplify your case writing process, remember:
The human touch remains essential – your expertise, judgment, and knowledge of your students' needs cannot be replaced
Fact-check all information – especially when using AI to generate data or industry information
Maintain your voice – use AI as a collaborator, not a replacement for your unique perspective
Consider ethical implications – be transparent with colleagues about how AI was used in your process
Looking Forward
As we celebrate our 50th issue, we're excited about how tools like AI are making case writing more accessible to educators across disciplines. The democratization of case creation means more diverse perspectives and scenarios for our students to learn from.
A tool that I use regularly is writinganalysis.ca to better understand the clarity and complexity of my writing. I developed this free tool to help the writer remove biases and clearly see what their writing is saying and requiring of their readers.
